Mosquitos represent a major threat to global health and are likely to become more dangerous in the future. Do we need to prioritise the destruction of this pest and to perhaps introduce more radical means to do so?
To protect you / use ...stay inside use baggy close , ther like be attracted tend to sop /parfumerie smell , Ther don't like wood smoke smell (I think there is no real good protection )
Certain types of monomolecular surface films (MMF) are used for control of mosquitoes and midges. Agnique and Arosurf are the only commercially produced MMFs for mosquito and midge control today. Each product has the same active ingredient.
Dear Colleagues! Sorry for disturbing your interesting discussion. Let's start talking about mosquitoes - vectors of infection (malaria, new viral diseases) - with one of Ray Bradbury stories of how travel size on the fantastic "time machine" stole a butterfly in the past and how events have changed dramatically in the world after such a small incident. So it can occur in nature, and then in society. Destruction of mosquitoes will lead to the fact that this niche filled by other living beings, and further - the plot fantasgarmonii - unpredictable.
"The mosquito kills more people than any other animal on earth," Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta, this week. "Is there any redeeming feature? ... Well, they do provide food for birds and other insects, but I think the world would be a lot better off without them."
One approach is to spray a formula of bacteria around mosquito habitats. Mosquitoes eat up the bacteria, which then kill them and only them (and related insects) by destroying the lining of their guts.
Another strategy could be to develop tools that only kill the few mosquito species that transmit diseases to people and animals and spare the other 3,000 or so species that don't do any harm, said Laura Harrington, professor and chair of entomology at Cornell University.
Mosquitoes and cockroaches are insects which have survived the meteorite crash that wiped out the dinosaurs. Maybe we can learn their means of adaptation or learn the art of developing an exoskeleton to cover our skins. Humans would look great with such exoskeletons.... From a standpoint of mosquitoes being a pest; in actual humans are to be blamed because they have learnt the art of stagnating water rather than utilizing it.
Perhaps encouraging populations of Toxorhychites in areas where disease vectoring mosquitos breed might help. This species of mosquito kills the larvae of others and feeds exclusively on them. They are also known to kill every mosquito larva they encounter even when they don't actually eat them. Since this species does not attack humans and will kill its own when no others are left it might be a useful aid to destroying the disease vectors.
They provide food and pollination, but spread diseases! Thus, experts should bring the best decision. We, the humans are linked to the other species, there are chains that must not be broken.
Generally, there are three kinds of methods: physical, chemical and biological methods for you to use in your enviornment to protect you from the mosquitos.
If you are living or working in the area where the mosquito-transmited disease is popular, the effective way also could include getting vaccine to prevent the disease, however, not all the mosquito-prone disease has the vaccine for use, then the mosquito-net probably the best way for you to stop the mosquitos from biting you.
Of course, the chemical way is most used by many people to directly kill the mosquitos, but it seemed that there were many kinds of mosquitos had resistance to the chemical weapon.
Agreed with other scholars' suggestions on the elimination of mosquito & prevention from their attack. Besides, we should also eliminate the breeding ground of the mosquito which includes the following extracted from this link:
I agree with what Dr. Vladimir has said. Rather than eliminating Mosquitoes, preventive measures such as using mosquito net while sleeping would be more effective in fighting against mosquitoes.
Does anybidy know what happened to our friend, Dr. Lawrence Broxmeyer?. His profile does not exist anymore!.
He actually shared this question with us.
What you can do at home to deal with mosquitos
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and CDC recommend taking a combination of approaches that includes eliminating standing water, and that could also include an outdoor misting system. However, there has not been enough research to know if the misting systems are effective at controlling mosquitoes and other insect pests, and they might end up killing butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects. In addition, the agencies warn that pesticides could pose human health risks if too much is used or they build up in the environment.
When in areas with Zika and other diseases spread by mosquitoes, take the following steps:
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
Stay in places with air conditioning and window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside.
Take steps to control mosquitoes inside and outside your home.
Sleep under a mosquito bed net if you are overseas or outside and are not able to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents with one of the following active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthane-diol. Choosing an EPA-registered repellent ensures the EPA has evaluated the product for effectiveness. When used as directed, EPA-registered insect repellents are proven safe and effective, even for pregnant and breast-feeding women.Always follow the product label instructions.
Reapply insect repellent as directed.
Do not spray repellent on the skin under clothing.
If you are also using sunscreen, apply sunscreen before applying insect repellent.
To protect your child from mosquito bites:Do not use insect repellent on babies younger than 2 months old.
Do not use products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol on children younger than 3 years old.
Dress your child in clothing that covers arms and legs.
Cover crib, stroller, and baby carrier with mosquito netting.
Do not apply insect repellent onto a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, and cut or irritated skin.
Adults: Spray insect repellent onto your hands and then apply to a child’s face.
Treat clothing and gear with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated items.Treated clothing remains protective after multiple washings. See product information to learn how long the protection will last.
If treating items yourself, follow the product instructions carefully.
Do NOT use permethrin products directly on skin. They are intended to treat clothing.
Humans would never agree unanimously on a single subject (examples are how to fight ozone depletion, global warming, pesticide use, etc) that is why the mosquito will survive a possible human assault.
Another method not to attract mosquitos which I learned from Aristotle, is that mosquitos don't like fish smell or smell of sea animals. Maybe it is the salt that keeps mosquitos at bay?
@Berouz and all others: regarding Dr, Lawrence Broxmeyer's RG- "mystical Disappearance" I dont have a clue what was - is going on ....
since I was interested to see what another impact of that disappearance means for postings of Dr. Broxmeyer in many threads (and which I can't believe with regard to "citing RG-threads& Replies/Postings): you can see by yourself : cf: https://www.researchgate.net/post/Is_there_a_relationship_between_diabetes_and_Celiac_Disease/4 and find only 4 replies out of usually 10 (Replies 31-40)!
It seems I am not quite right up top .... does that mean that if you are interested in a certain thread / theme and the replies (some if not most of them can be categorized "scientifically based or at least "biased") you have to save all to your harddisk in due time (= immediately!)??
Dear Ljubomir, dear all, as I said in my last reply (#022) not only the "mysterious" disappearance (hoping Dr. Broxmeyer is alive and in good health) is "alarming", for me also it is alarming that obviously all answers (and/or the questions?? too??) are deleted from threads, as I have seen some hour ago, cf.: https://www.researchgate.net/post/What_happened_to_the_Alkaline_ethanol_and_it_turned_dark_brown#view=568aec057eddd370848b456c
I note that Dr Broxmeyer's account has been entirely removed from RG. It is unclear whether he requested that or whether it was removed for some other reason. It is a pity, he had some good ideas about combatting mosquito's even though I did not agree in total with them.
I do not believe mosquito eradication is a realistic goal. Genetically modified sterile mosquitoes also do not look like they will displace the wild population at present. And it is probably not necessary. Keeping mosquito breeding populations low in residential areas using conventional means (that could be improved) along with good public health surveillance of mosquito-borne diseases has been effective in many countries. Hong Kong is testament to this. The mosquitos remain, but disease is low and rarely fatal.
Dear Ria! You have argued the need a balanced approach to the problem of the relationship between Human and Nature. When you attempt to correct these relationships (people - disease - mosquitoes - ecology) should always take into account the existing problems and a variety of effects that are associated with the violation of human relationships and nature in the future.
The civic body collected water samples from the slums to check whether it was safe for consumption and created awareness among the slum dwellers to prevent vector borne diseases in the city,
Thank you for this informative discussion. I hope they return Dr Broxmeyer because in my part of the world, it means he has been kidnapped (God forbid that it is the case)
Mosquito-borne infections and diseases are not a problem that we can use a one-way traffic to solve. The steps provided by Dr Ahmadi-Nebushan appear to be appropriate. However, when you consider income the financial status of the people at risk and the environment it becomes very painful. I will just list a few
When in areas with Zika and other diseases spread by mosquitoes, take the following steps:
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.Yes
Stay in places with air conditioning and window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside.
a) There is no electricity in our towns, cities and villages and fuel to power generating plants is so expensive that even the rich can afford to run geherators 24/7
b) A good friend of mine, a young scientist from Germany revealed to me last year during a course in Dar es salem, Tanzania, that in Africa,"life is on the streets", that is why people enjoy day and night outdoor as part of culture
Take steps to control mosquitoes inside and outside your home.Yes
Sleep under a mosquito bed net if you are overseas or outside and are not able to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
c) The heat may not allow you to stay under the net at nigh so unconsciously, you will get up and either go out or push the net aside. I discovered during my field trips that a treated net hung nearby

d) Our agencies exist but those who are selected to work there most of the time have no knowledge of mosquitoes, the diseases they vector, their breeding sites, etc, if you go to them, they can not be of any help to you because they are political/ religious/ ethnic appointees not technical experts placed at the right post.
Do not use products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol on children younger than 3 years old.
e) Lack of funds makes it impossible to select what drugs to use, availability is the deciding factor. free & donated are not shared to the needy but resold by pharmacists and chemists with the conivance of focal persons in charge of distribution
Dress your child in clothing that covers arms and legs. What about the heat?
Cover crib, stroller, and baby carrier with mosquito netting. Yes!
Do not apply insect repellent onto a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, and cut or irritated skin.
f) Yes but can they afford insecticides? we are champions of counterfits!
Adults: Spray insect repellent onto your hands and then apply to a child’s face.
Treat clothing and gear with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated items.Treated clothing remains protective after multiple washings. See product information to learn how long the protection will last.
g) We may need honest health extension workers to administer and or supervise preventive or curative plans.
If treating items yourself, follow the product instructions carefully. Do NOT use permethrin products directly on skin. They are intended to treat clothing.

Dear all! Thanks to all the participants in the discussion for the support the view that each person in the commission of acts of nature and society must first think about a plan of action and the effects of implementation of the plan. Homo sapiens proceeds to action only after reflection.
I’m sure everyone reading this right now has experienced the redness, the swelling and the uncontrollable itching that comes with a mosquito bite. It’s enough to ruin any barbecue or picnic!
Many people turn to store bought insect repellents to keep mosquitoes away, but these insect repellents often contain a toxic pesticide that is dangerous to human health. This pesticide is known as DEET.
Heavy exposure to DEET has been linked to memory loss, headache, weakness, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, tremors and shortness of breath in humans and is particularly toxic to children.
Needless to say, this is a pesticide we do NOT want to be using – especially when there are so many more effective ways to keep mosquitoes away using natural remedies and ingredients.
This article will reveal 13 of the best ways to repel mosquitoes so you can enjoy a mosquito free summer!

Bug Repellent Sunscreen
This sunscreen is multi-purpose – it protects from harmful UV sun rays like any good sunscreen, but it also repels bugs, including mosquitoes.
On top of that it’s all natural and contains none of the toxic chemicals found in many over-priced store-bought sunscreens.
Throw Rosemary On The Barbecue
Mosquitoes often strike while we are barbecuing, but this simple trick will turn your barbecue into a natural mosquito repellent, while also adding delicious flavour to your food!
Throw a few stalks of rosemary on the hot coals to give off a mosquito repelling aroma.
Plant Mosquito Repellent Plants
There are a number of plants that have mosquito repellent properties – for example feverfew, citronella, catnip and lavender are four of the most effective. Plant these in flower beds or containers placed around your garden and keep mosquitoes away.
Here is a great article revealing 11 of the best mosquito repelling plants.
Eat More Garlic
Note: While this may repel mosquitoes, it may also repel fellow humans!
After eating lots of garlic, garlic oil is gently released from your pores. This garlic oil acts almost like a barrier between your skin and the mosquitoes.
Apply Neem Oil
Neem oil is a vegetable extracted from the Neem tree native to the Indian sub-continent – it is sometimes referred to as “the tree of life”.
Neem oil is a natural insecticide used on plants to keep harmful insects away, and it works the same way on humans. Apply neem oil to the skin and keep mosquitoes away.
Neem oil is available to buy from this page on Amazon.
Mosquito Repellent Drink
I’ve read a number of anecdotes which suggest that drinking apple cider vinegar is an effective mosquito repellent. Add one or two tablespoons of ACV to 16oz of water and consume. Sweeten with one tablespoon of honey to counteract the bitterness if you wish.
Attract Bats
Bats can reportedly eat 1,000 mosquitoes per night. Attracting bats to your garden can help to significantly reduce the number of mosquitoes and reduce your chances of being bitten.
Here is a great article sharing some ideas to attract bats to your garden.
Eliminate Standing Water
Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water. Getting rid of standing water will cut down the number of mosquitoes in the immediate vicinity. Standing water can include bird baths, puddles and pet water bowls. Make sure gutters are draining well and empty any garden items that collect water.
Make A Mosquito Trap
A homemade mosquito trap is another way to reduce the number of mosquitoes in the area. This trap uses CO2 to attract mosquitoes into a soda bottle from which they can’t escape.
Find out how to make this mosquito trap and how it works here.
UPDATE: I’ve seen lots of comments online that this mosquito trap method doesn’t work. For something more heavy duty and effective, try this superpowered mosquito trap.
BONUS IDEA: Homemade Mosquito Repelling Incense
Recently we published a brilliant tutorial for making your own mosquito repelling incense. It’s a beautiful smelling incense without the toxic chemicals associated with regular mosquito incense coils. Did you know 12 hours of burning these coils is equivalent to filling a room with the smoke of 75-100 cigarettes? Instead make this!
We need to go back into cultural anthropology and medical anthropology to get long lasting and ecofriendly solutions to ravaging vector-borne infections and insect-related nuisance. I am advocating cultural approach to medical entomology because it is cheap, safe and applications do not require any expertise or skills. Thanks a million for sharing this affordable solutions to insect diseases.
If door are closed early, this reduces probabilities of entry by unfed mosquitoes. Netted outlets will complement the other methods.
When the mosquito bites, it also transfers saliva and anticoagulants to the blood and may be a carrier of the disease. This cycle stops killing the mosquito. There are some ways to contain the disease such as isolating patients and vaccinating. One of the most important methods that began in 1880 is the nets of the Nouvham, which have greatly helped to keep external factors out of the buildings.
The municipality uses the larvicides (Fenitrothion) to kill the mosquito larvae. Premises should remain neat and clean and have to use a mosquito net which is hazardous free and environment friendly.
Can Mosquitoes Carry the Coronavirus? Here's What Experts Say
Relatively few human viruses have the ability to infect both humans and mosquitoes. “The vast majority of human viruses (such as influenza, HIV, and herpes) have been infecting humans for a very very long time, and even though many of these end up in our blood, they are still unable to infect mosquitoes,” says Gallichotte. “Conversely, there are many mosquito viruses that are unable to infect humans, or any mammals. There are no known coronaviruses that can infect mosquitoes.”
Brazil will build the world’s largest mosquito factory in hopes of protecting up to 70 million people from mosquito-borne viruses, such as dengue. Over the next ten years, the facility will produce and release up to five billion mosquitoes per year that carry a bacterium that stops them from transmitting viruses. Trials in Indonesia and elsewhere have shown that the method could reduce the incidence of dengue by up to 77%...
Popular soaps might make some people more delicious to Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Researchers tempted the bloodsuckers with nylon sleeves that had been worn by four volunteers who used soaps that are popular in the United States. Washing with Dove, Dial and Simple Truth soap brands increased the attractiveness of some of the volunteers. Native brand soap tended to repel mosquitoes. Chemical ecologist and study co-author Clément Vinauger likened the combination of flowery, fruity soaps and human odour as “like both coffee and muffins” for mozzies. “Very appealing.”
Managing mosquitoes involves a combination of methods, such as: using insecticides (after insecticide mapping of that area), eliminating breeding sites, using bed nets, and developing genetic control methods. I think the easiest and most effective approach would be the elimination of breeding sites.
