How should the trajectory of the state variables of a passive/dissipative dynamical system should be?

Generally by plotting the trajectories of a state variables, one can learn the properties of the system. If the trajectory converges to zero, then it can be concluded that the system is asymptotically stable. Likewise, how can one conclude that a system is passive/dissipative under a particular input?
