I am looking for a datasource where I can find the amount of money that companies pay on wages and salaries. In particular, I am interested in these numbers for US listed companies. I have found some information on money spend on wages in Compustat for the S&P 500, but this data covers only about one-fifth of the data.

Why don't you collect them from financial reporting of each company in SP one by one. This way is cost but it will help you have unique data and you can control for the reliability of data

Sure, that might be an option, however I try to avoid handcollecting data in particular because if the data exists, it is likely to be included in a database given that the sample is the firms in the S&P500
