I am writing a paper on magical realism in John’s Gospel (John 2:1–11 and 6:1–15) in order to develop sacramental realism in John 6. I would be greatfull for any thoughts and recommendations.
Though I wasn’t particularly investigating magical realism in religious texts, my research (Magical Realism, the Oracular, Mysticism and Belief Legacy in Ahmed Saadawi’s Frankenstein in Baghdad, February 2020. Critique Studies in Contemporary Fiction. DOI: 10.1080/00111619.2020.1725415) touches on the significance of the religious heritage. I hope you find it useful.
Andrew Paul McKenzie Pegman, yes obviously ;). But I am interested at looking at magical realism as a genre for interpreting Jesus' miracles. Another interesting question of course is, "What is the difference between Magic and miracle?"
I don't see it in light of how the Bible views the difference in miracles and magic.
The magicians of Egypt and God working through Moses shows very well how they are not the same.
At first, the magicians of Egypt replicated the miracles from God through Moses. However, their abilities ceased, and they admitted that they were seeing the finger of God. Exodus 8:16-19.
It would be interesting to see how magical realism would work as a genre for interpreting Jesus' miracles, but I'm not sure how that would turn out. For me, trying to do this would be like trying to make a Christian version of Star Wars without radically changing the identity of the "Force".
