I am interested in research results showing the current number of smart cities in the world (or giving an approximate number of smart cities/smart city projects worldwide). My data goes to 2018, when the IHS Markit, a global information provider, stated that it's following 1015 smart cites project around the world. But I am looking for some more up-to-date general information. Thank you very much for any leads.

Urbanization is accelerating. Growing cities face the challenge of scaling while reducing greenhouse gas emissions because they require more infrastructure, consume more energy, and generate more waste. Cities now consume 78 percent of the world's energy and emit more than 60 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Cities must use digitization and wireless technology to operate smarter, produce and distribute energy more efficiently, and prioritize renewable energy in order to increase infrastructure and capacity while decreasing carbon emissions. Municipal assets can be monitored in real-time and controlled remotely by leveraging IoT, residents can actively track their energy consumption, and cities can control when and where power is required.
In collaboration with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), the IMD With world Competitiveness Center's Smart City Observatory announced the launch of the first edition of the IMD Smart City Index 2019, which ranks 102 cities worldwide.
Though the number of smart cities are getting updates, the fundamental problems are yet remaining the same, unfortunately... there is always anxiety for food, water, shelter and safety.
If you are just interested in solving some of them using the modern technologies, you will be frustrated.
