I had submitted an article to an international journal, the editor does not communicate/gave decisions even after more than 1 year even after communication from mine side. Please suggest what should I do?
Rakesh Roushan I understand the frustration very well, having experienced the same which luckily ended up in a publication in Q1 journal.
I am curious to know whether your article had been sent to the reviewers at all or still sitting with the Editor? You can check that with the Editorial team via email (do not forget to mention the article number that has been assigned to your submission).
If its their system for more than a year or so, you really cant blame the COVID situation and unavailability of potential reviewers. I will guess the following in your case:
1) Its sitting with editorial team and an Editor is assigned:
1a) they are unable to find potential reviewers
1b) Reviewers did not accept the review request (you cant force them right?)
2) Its sitting with editorial team and an Editor is yet to be assigned.
3) Its still with reviewers, they are yet to submit their recommendations
The only thing you can do is:
Write them referring your submission, as a follow up regarding "what is exactly the status". You can bluntly ask them if it still is under review process? Also, you can mention them that coauthors are willing to withdraw the submission as it has been a complete waste of time cause of poor editorial handling and you all are willing to submit it somewhere.
A journal of international reputation when managed by a good experienced editor-in-chief should respond within that period of time. It is more than overdue and the person in charge should reply on your inquiry. I must confess I have already had also ms. which were in the editorial system for one year. It is not an easy task today to find competent reviewers for one or the other submitted paper. As I do not know neither the journal nor the entire submission process I cannot give you further advice how to proceed.

Hai..I feel all well recognized referred journals are not delaying the process and they get full support from the potential reviewer. So, we have to identify the publisher who would able to complete the publication process in time. Another answer to your question i.e. not giving any reply even for the year, in this case you need not to wait for the year..it is better you submit the paper in parallel with another publisher and accept who have been completed the publication process in time..They can not publish your research without obtaining the signed copyright agreement with you..so you choose who have completed the process in time also, to avoid all these things it is better to choose correct journal for your research publication..
@ Karthigeyan . S I agree with u sir, we can submit parallelly with another publisher. and accept who have been completed the publication process in time.
Karthigeyan . S I am quite against the suggestion of submitting the same article parallelly to a second publisher. During the submission, authors generally need to declare (in cover letters etc.) that the submission is neither published nor submitted elsewhere. It might become tricky if both the publisher accepts the same manuscript at the same time. If it is reported, the article might be retracted as well in extreme case. no author will want that, since a good amount of time and considerable effort is put behind every article, big or small does not matter.
So better play safe. I will request Rakesh Roushan to contact the editorial team first that you are willing to withdraw and submit elsewhere. Let the editorial team give you a go ahead. Then you are free to do anything with it.
Mr. Souvik Sen, thank you for your view on my comments on the topic..i fully agree to all your points and in view of the same i too mentioned it is better to choose correct journal for publication of our works rather than thinking in other options..all the best in your research work..
Good point Souvik. Besides its unethical to submit same paper in two different journals. This issue is very common for every researcher. I wish a speedy decision on the paper.
@ souvik sen sir you are right. At the time of submission, authors generally declared that the submission is neither published nor submitted elsewhere.
Generally Good journals have a long waiting list for publication of journals and there frequency for publication is also less.
If I withdraw the paper they have may have no problem but at the same time if I submit it to another journal will face same problem.
Normally, within a certain time after submission of article, the concerned editorial time sends the article to select reviewer(s) to reply with comments within a certain time period. These days, this is more stick as most of the the journals are online and have their own editorial manager system with deadlines and time bound links. Moreover, it is certainly expected to not to submit the article to any other publisher till the answer from journal concerned reaches to author reg. acceptance or rejection. Further, many a times, the answer to author comes in the form of a request for revision/attending corrections rendered by reviewer(s); this scenario is relatively much better. However, if still there appears delay, the author can always write online/offline to Editor of concerned journal/publication firm as a reminder reg. status of review.
A number of useful comments are already given by learned researchers above. They all are useful enough.
Hola Atul, el tiempo de espera para la publicación no debe ser mayor a un año, de lo contrario enviar una carta al editor y cancelar lo solicitado, luego buscar otras revistas donde publicar su manuscrito, éxitos.
No Problem Sen, send letter to the Editor asking what is the problem ? and better is the comments of Atul Kohli. Thanks Some Journals as example Springer wait over 200 days ? Is it Normal dear Shib ?
you can contact the editor/ publisher for progress .....via official mail or can call them....but do not sent it in other journal before withdrawing the article....as this is also a procedure ....
It is possible that, the article has never reached the journal, or something has gone wrong. I suggest for the last time write the editor for guidance. If you did not receive an answer, just try another journal. Also, a qustion for you.......how do you grade your submitted article??
you should keep contact the journal's editor. also try to send email to the journal's reviewers if it found on the journal home page request them to ask the editor to replay your massages.
I think 6 months is a maximum to hear the first reply from the journal. It should be like that. But practically, some articles take around one year or more.
When journals send me articles to review, they keep sending notes before the 1 month revision period ends, and after that probably each day. I wonder how it takes them a year to publish or take decision. The journal editors may be relaxing.
A journal (editor) should first acknowledge a submission, and you should be able to follow the submission and review process on line. An initial review and return within about 3 months (sometimes
