Antimicrobial implants releases drugs at the insertion site for the initial prevention of bacterial adherence from the exit site (skin or external tissues). Duration is not considered significant since it does the initial prevention of bacterial adherence. Once it is implanted without bacterial adherence onthe material from the exit site, the implant is said to sterile inside. If necessary any drug carriers could be added to coat the material for sustained release and also to increase the durability. In such cases duration of the drug in the material could be increased depending on the target site.
