Our institution is planning to introduce ISO guidelines for chemical management in the labs. In this process a number of unopened bottles of chemicals are assigned for disposal in the name of “expired chemicals”.  Procurement of these routinely used chemicals is quite time consuming and timely availability is critical for the smooth functioning of the labs. Many chemicals which are fairly stable do not come with an expiry date.  In such situations, some labs dispose unopened chemicals after 5 years even if the chemical is perfectly in working condition. Honestly, some of the steps/guidelines for disposal of chemicals really don’t make any sense.

I want to know what is the standard practice for disposing chemicals which can stay OK even after a long-term storage. I am sure dry chemicals in the powdered form (eg: Agar, NaCl, NaOH,…etc) can stay for years without any negative effect on the experiment with proper storage conditions. So is there any guideline to dispose/extend the disposal time for these stable chemicals. Highly appreciate your thoughts on this aspect.
