As of now, there are over a million people who have recovered from COVID all across the world. If some of their antibodies were to be isolated, and antigen binding specificity established, I wonder what the timeline would be to come up with a feasible treatment for critically ill patients. Hopefully companies such as Janssen (group of J&J) are working on it.
I wonder if anyone knows the timeline for such the development of such a treatment. Weeks/months/years?
A vaccine would be the ultimate weapon against the corona virus and the best route back to normal life for developing an entirely new vaccine is at least four years. But recent technology and development the timeline and get a vaccine in the next few months instead of years.
Kamal Jonnalagadda Production is a continuous process once the target is identified. But the challenge lies in identifying the target and the production will go in a regular process of any monoclonal antibody which would be from 4 months to 8 months for large scale. This long is due to pass the regulatory process of clonal origin of the molecule. However at some places the plasma therapy is being adopted. where the plasma from a recovered patient will be injected in the diseased and critically ill patient. However this is not currently approved but used as a compassionate treatment. The plasma contains all the antibodies generated against Coronavirus but which one is responsible for the recovery will only be made clear once the virus can be efficiently cultured in labs. However there are large number of labs working on this all over the world. Some are already under clinical trials and these are RNA vaccines.
