Developing standard germination environment can lead to more accurate germination determinations.
The time for the germination test will be greatly influenced by the incubation temperature and the substrate.
For germination of many crops a 25 C moist environment is the prevailing condition for beans and corn etc.
Peper towels and cellulose pads maintained moist can give a full germination count a week.
Lentils are a cool season species and that will give the lover temperature of incubation and longer assay period.

It is important to know seeds from what type of plant ,their environmental condition ,perennial or annual, summer or winter climate seeds to use for germination . Hi Ali, This is a good question, I think that these optimal germination periods and temperatures are established by special committees based on the scientific knowledge generated from a certain plant species, considering seed biology, varieties within species, assay conditions among others. If a species has not been weel-known or let say extensively lab tested any recommendation could be a bit subjective. If you want to conduct a research (not about this topic, lab tests) in a little known species, you may provide all detail information about germination conditions this will helps other researchers in the future.
The period is determined purely by the emergence of leaf and/or root from the seed :)
Usually R50 is a important germination parameter which has to be recorded to evaluate the germination speed. therefore, practically minimum test period till to achieve 50% of germination rate should be allowed. as afar as temperature conditions are concerned, if no guidelines available, than alternate temperature range of 28 and 25 degree may be used for tropical species.

All of your parameters you are needed, you must achieve from several pre-experiment series.
for obtain the optimal temperature(s) you have to place your seeds on different incubator with constant and Alternating temperatures (if you species that works on it has the sensitivity to light for germination, you should consider it). then, through statistical analysis you can get base, optimum and ceiling temperatures.
of course ISTA has mentioned the rules to conduct standard seed germination such as the number of seeds, type of container and the other things.
for determine the period of germination test you have to monitor your seed containers (specially in optimal temperature) every day and record it , until for several consecutive daye you dont observe any germinated seed , in the other hand, they become unchanged.
