I am making a model of freezing saturated sand in COMSOL. As we know that the water and porous media (sand) is compressed with the decreasing temperature (above 0 degree C, fluid phase). But then the water is expanded when the it is frozen (below 0 degree C, solid phase) while the porous material is still tend to be compressed.
In COMSOL there is a thermal expansion module that can be used to simulate the thermal-deformation behavior of a material, but I found it difficult to model the saturated porous media with changing phase.
Is there anyone do similar modeling?

All i know is that in COMSOL you have the possibility to implement law behaviour to describe your changing phase and your thermal deformation.
I may suggest you to use an energetic model (phase-field, which takes account the energy equilibrium between your phases during all the evolution. That energetic model should also be able to take into account changing phase from liquid to solid or solid to liquid. You have Ginzburg-Landau equation which is well known in phase transition, Fick law which takes account of diffusion (Temperature, water ...) between phases. By combining those you can obtain quite good things.
