Metallic thin films of thickness lower than 100 nm show a reducing in-plane conductivity with the reduction of the thickness due to electron scattering phenomena. However, nobody speaks about the out-plane conductivity. Would the electron scattering phenomena affects in the same manner the out-plane conductivity? Of course, we have to take into account the contact resistance of both interfaces.
Along the normal direction of the very thin plates less then 10 nm quantum confinement starts to enter into the scenario, and plus the surface states become very important agents in the determination of the electronic properties as well as the conductivity along the surface normal. The topological properties (surface ripples and wrinkles) of the top and bottom interfaces definitely affects the bulk out of plane conductivity as well as in-plane!
