Depending on how quickly water molecules diffuse into PLA and how quickly hydrolysis reactions occur, PLA can degrade by either surface erosion or bulk erosion. When water molecules diffuse more quickly than they hydrolyze, a homogeneous deterioration process known as bulk erosion occurs.
