I am a student planning to do a project this semester for university. I plan to purchase a PIC16F628A PIC.
I am talking about hardware and software needed.

the first decision is between buying an evaluation board or designing a board adapted to your needs.
Evaluation boards are often equipped with a USB connector, so you can just plug the board into a USB port of your computer; the (free) IDE (integrated development environment) provided by Microchip for programming and debugging usually contains drivers for a direct connection from the IDE to the eva boards.
If you design a board yourself you will usually not integrate a microcontroller for interfacing to USB (and even if you would, chances are that it doesn't properly communicate with the driver on your computer). Instead, you can purchase programming hardware (I use PICKit 3) which provides a connection between USB and your board. PICKit 3 comes with a cable, having a single row, 5 pin, 100 mil spaced female connector. Therefore your design has to include a 5 pin pinhead; the arrangement of the signals can be found in the PICKit documentation. PICKit will be recognized by the IDE, so you don't need additional software.

Hi Enrique,
First of all it is a nice choice to use PIC micro controller for your project. Next if you are going to program your PIC at first you will need a platform where you can write/compile your desired code and to begin with you may use MicroC. MicroC is a compiler where you can use C-language to write your code and when you compile the code MicroC will generate a .HEX file. Now when you are done with your code and the .HEX file is created the next task is to burn/load the .HEX file onto the PIC. To do that better you buy a PIC development board which can be connected to the PC over USB. Finally you will require another software which can detect the PIC development board and enables you to load the .HEX code onto the controller. There are a few PIC programmer software (a driver amy be required) available you just use the one which is compatible with the development board you have purchased.
