Kindly guide me; what is major difference between GCM and RCM and what are their limitations? I am doing a study to find out future climate scenarios in a small catchment of 150 km 2 which one I should use and why?
General Circulation models need downscaling due to their coarse spatial resolution and then bias correction is applied. But Regional climate models are already downscaled having finer spatial resolution then GCMs so only bias correction is required for RCMs. So for small watersheds RCMs are preferred.
If you have RCM, it would be nice. Otherwise You have to go with GCM at stations by Statistical downscaling. You can use RCM Grid data to stations by statistical downscaling.
RCM would be pity good. If RCM data is not available, you have to go with GCM downscaling at stations. Your observation data is very important for this.
Downscaling is a magic.... It depends on how smart you are! If you are excellent in programming then you will have advantages...... Without it, downscaling is the difficult job. If you like to use multi-GCMs then it would be more havoc. Of course, good RCM will have advantages...
for Kornfield, the length of climate prediction would be 80 years more less.the size of RCM from cordex east asia is 0.44 degree equal to 50 km. meanwhile the GCM size is 0.5 degree. I will use it for climate change study in distributed hydrological model in rainforest basin in Indonesia.
I will use the climate change scenario to predict water balance and sediment. I forget to tell, the size size is 2316 square Km. so, based on Your opinion, the both GCM and RCM will have no significant effect since those are sufficient for the basin and both GCM and RCM are proper since the catchment area is higher than 10% of the model grid.Am I correct?
About the accuracy, I suppose medium (not so high accuracy).
if I overlayed with GCM, it is not fall squarely, but falls into 4 grid (all in some part of each grid), but I have not succeed to overlay with RCM since it could not be displayed on GIS (i have no clue, perhaps someone can help me?) .
Here is link to download the ncfile (but before only filling our information, that´s it) :
I have another question, I saw in nc file: lat, lon, rlat and rlon. rlat and rlon only for matlab isn´t it?if we use other reader such as netCDF4 excel, we have to use lat and lon. Am I correct?
