I produced Glycerol monolaurate in lab scale, with a melting point of about 37 C. Now I want to use this product as animal feed additives. However the melting point of 37 makes the product difficult to be sold as solid nor as liquid. Now I need to convert this product to be liquid at room temperature, what do you suggest? Kindly put into consideration that the final product is feed additive.
One suggestion is to mix with a another material with very low melting point.

Dear Ahmad Mustafa that's an interesting question. With 37 °C the melting point of you glycerol monolaurate is already fairly low. It is well established in chemistry that impurities lead to a melting point depression. Thus my answer to your question would be to deliberately a small amount (e.g. 2%) of glycerol as "impurity". After mixing well, you should get a product that is liquid at room temperature. Glycerol should cause no problem, as it can be used as animal feed additive itself. How about that?

I tried this but it did not work as glycerol and monolaurin are different in terms of polarity. So they can not mixed together and form stable mixture. when you mix both and wait for a while they become two layers. the top layer is Monolaurin (semi solid), the bottom is liquid glycerol). Even adding emulsifier did not work. the last trial was by adding water and emulsifier, this worked only with a conc. of 7% monolaurin. higher percentage turns the mixture to creamy paste at room temperature.
the only thing worked with me is mixing monolaurin with propionic acid. but the problem us that it has very low pH, corrosive and unpleasant smell.
Dear Ahmad Mustafa that's pretty strange. I would have expected to see that the two are readily miscible. I agree with you in the propionic acid is not a good idea because of the smell and the corrosive nature.
What if you add a small percentage of a physiologically acceptable natural oil such as rapeseed oil or sunflower oil? Such oils should be fine concerning the use as animal feed and they don't have an unpleasant smell. Good luck!
Thank you Frank. Yes I tried soybean oil. To have liquid mixture, the oils phase must be the major. Maximum 80% oil to 20% monolaurin. I tried 50% all but also the mixture solidified at room temp.
