Non communicable disease is one of the major problem in Pacific island countries, how we can control these diseases by promotion of horticultural crops, what steps need to be done
This question is probably related to the education of the population regarding healthy eating choices. I think it would be essential to promote eating low fat and high fibre vegetable diets. These crops can be hard to come by on Pacific Islands. It would be necessary to increase the production by using hydroponic greenhouses. Irrigation with desalinated sea water produced by electrodialysis plants, and powered with solar panels would be ideal. This would also provide jobs. However, it needs high capital investment and skills. Another option would be to increase production of native edible plants, also using irrigation water produced with electrodialysis. These desalination plants can be very cost effective and just need small solar panels and no battery. They can easily be assembled with little training and cleaned by reversing the current.
Biofortification of vegetable crops is need of the day. By doing this, we can enhance essential nutrients consumption which would be helpful to combat adverse conditions of the body.
Horticultural crops are the chief source of vitamin, mineral and fiber and all these are play vital role in human nutrition and health. Thus horticultural crops are considered as protective food.
