This is the 'route' of many areas of modern Medicine and Surgery, and clinicians need to be aware of the lessons of the past, and the great advances that are possible, in the context of their clinical judgement and training.

The potential for commercialisation is the key motivator for the industry to invest in research and development. Although the investments are huge, companies keep following that path. There is a lot of potential in the field, because of demagogic developments, but there is also competition between companies.

This speeds up evolution of products, not only in terms of functionality but also in terms of cost. Of course the latest technology products and treatments are usually very expensive, but they also set a new benchmark for the "standard of care", and if the intervention is successful it will become more common.
