I have a friend who is making use of a well-validated questionnaire about technology. She made some wording adjustments to fit her local context. Now a reviewer is asking that the wording adjustments be explained and justified.
How much can you change a validated research instrument to fit your local circumstances without extensive justification?

A change in the operational definion of a variable (expressed in the wording of the question which produce its values) can be justified defending the thesis that the validity of a measure is context sensitive. If you change the context of your study, you are authorized to change the wording of your questions (this situation is illustrated in the best way in a transnational survey, when you have to change the language used for your questions in each country involved in the study).
