For operating the optoelectronic device, you need electron-hole pair generation by optical energy. That's a meaning OPTO-ELECTRONICS.
Exciton binding energy means that room temperature operation of anything exciton-based requires a material with huge exciton binding energy like ZnO.

When you talk about exciton of a quantum dot photosensitizer, it is always better to have exciton energy which locates far red side, meaning in the NIR or IR region, so that the sensitizer captures most of the sunlight with high photon-to-current conversion yields possible. However, when the exciton fwhm is very narrow, better to combine different excitons covering the whole solar spectrum, the concept of Tandem Solar cells.
The distance of separation between electron and hole in semiconductor is Bohr radius. Nano device electronic fabrications are mainly depends upon the its dimensions which should be less than the Bohr exciton radius. Exciton radius is related with its exciton energy which is important to fabricate optoelectronic devices.
