With the digital twin technology slowly making its stride to the shipping and offshore industry, what are the short and long term challenges? How reliable is this technology in terms of assessing the safety of the structure, monitoring and diagnosing potential issues without having human interaction on the ship (offshore structures) onboard?
The technology has the capacity to modernize and optimize shipbuilding, or essentially any sophisticated, manual-intensive enterprise that involves highly specialized systems that require continual inspection and repair. Digital twin technology has the potential to alter virtually any manufacturing company, including many in the metals, mining, and utility departments.
The fourth industrial revolution or Industry 4.0 is the new concept which is discussed in all technology companies in the world. The idea is to use new technologies and the miniaturization of electronic components, to change the production system and increase efficiency. The concept of Digital Twin is one of the most important components of Industry 4.0. It is composed of three distinct elements based on the information mirroring model: virtual product, physical product and the linkage between the two. A Digital Twin is a digital model of a real physical system, the twin is unique and corresponds exactly to the physical model with all the errors of fabrication and tolerances of the system (West, 2016).The technology of Digital Twin proves to be an effective platform that connects the virtual and physical worlds through technologies such as big data analytics, machine learning, simulation modelling, internet of things and cloud computing for asset management throughout the product life cycle. It integrates the data-centric product and information models.ın addition with 3 d painter tecnology broken machine part can be produce inside of the ships maybe in future can create parts using steel or a very hard plastic and thanks to digital twin copy we know every information and 3 d shape of the parts .so we dont need to go to shipyards for change to metherial and before going to metherial thanks to digital twin we dont need to inspection of ships before ships going to shipyard they can produce what we need to change.For me biggest advantage of digital twin for shipstructure;fatigue failure can be decrase and ships longevity can be extend.

In fact, I think that the digital twin can be very helpful. For ship recycling, for example, you may want to collect a Full Material Declaration of your products, and then create "Material Declaration" documents based on ISO 30005 "Ship Recycling". You can use digital twins' data to avoid dangerous substances when engineering discrete articles for shipbuilding. In the end, recycling would create less challenges for ship dismantling in the end, hopefully.
DXC as well as Tec4U or iPoint all host databases for chemical contents of materials for ship building. And www.imds-professional.com have trained ship suppliers and ship yards to provide such data.
Then, you could also get in touch with Mr. Henning Gramann of GSR GmbH (Green Ship Recycling) who support an "inventory of hazardous materials" (IHM) database called Nautilus Log. I do not recommend any of these companies commercially -- I just list them up. I hope that helps you.
