What about using Design Thinking (DT) as the approach or perspective of learning in education? Have you tried the processes of Inspiration, Ideation and Implementation? How to prototype (for instance) in management schools / classes?

I agree Design thinking is an out of the box approach for learning and sustainability.
System thinking is another approach widely used in the past. In the following paper, I have combined system thinking with " Knowledge capture & reuse" to provide a more robust design thinking (DT) solutions.

Perhaps good to contrast what you call Design Thinking (as a learning method) with 'problem solving'. In education there has been problem-based learning for some time. The problems however are carefully constructed 'artifical problems' (with some story around them that makes them 'realistic') and so as a teacher you know for sure that if the student manages to solve the problem she has also learned all that she needed to learn education-wise. A *good* design process is always also a strong learning process for the designer, but the student doesn't necessarily experience the constraints (compare a math problem: whether you want to go on or not: you have to go on until you have the 'answer'). In design the student needs the motivation to 'not take the easy way'. Because you can easily come up with 'a' design, say you're done, and have learned nothing. How to get students into the right 'mode' (motivation, perseverance, not giving up) is what I find most difficult.
What are your own ideas on applying design thinking to management? Is it not just a 'popular phrase', to be replaced by the next new thing?

thank you for your good answer / reflection! I still believe that DT is still in construction and may be just part of Experiential Learning (EL) in one perspective! The literature demonstrates that DT has a lot to run before any final conclusion:

Personally, I believe DT is very much appropriate to the search of new ideas / solutions to real problems; and DT can take many forms such as explained in the above paper. It is a good approach. I don't believe it is only a fashion, since the study how designers think is not a fall, but it is a topic of long and much research!

as a designer and understanding DT a bit as designers's thinking I see this method as a contextual aware approach. In the tradition of Horst Rittel and Lucius Burckhardt design cares about the system and the user experience in it rather than a technical problem like form, color, type or any other isolated item in other disciplines. Understanding and accepting a challenge as complex and in the interest of multiple stakeholders this inherents the perspective of sustainability. For education it means not only to take in account disciplinary, "technical" and, in well defined cases, functioning principles but to make students sensible for changing and dynamic environments/contexts and for different points of view. Design in this sense is mediating instead of passing through given interests.
