Classification of academic ranks/titles:
In Turkey after the doctorate degree, the appointment begins with Assistant Professor, then gradually follows Associate Professor and finally Professor. According to the recent news, the academic ranks in Turkey are going to be modified by the direct transition from the title "Dr." to "Assoc. Prof." - namely abolishing the title "Assist. Prof." In brief, I would like to learn the ongoing academic titles procedure in different countries.

In the United States it has traditionally been Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor if you are faculty that is on the tenure track. However, some universities have a non-tenure track for some faculty. In the non-tenure track the academic ranks of Instructor, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer are often found.
Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and Full Professor
As far as I know, the situation, here, in Greece, is the same as Turkey, that is, the academic titles are Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor.

With PhD, the title is assistant professor (or lecturer). The next title is associate professor, then professor.

Romania: Tenured Teaching Assistant (must have PhD), Lecturer, Conferentiar (local term for the French Maître de conférences), Professor. There are four ranks with PhDs.
Australia: Lecturer (Level A non-PhD, Level B with PhD), Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, Professor. Note that there is no Readership, like in some British universities.
Czech Republic:
- Odborný asistent (roughly corresponds to Assistant Professor)
- Docent (Associate Professor)
- Profesor (Full Professor)
In Costa Rica (Central America) is weird. When you begin to work in some Universities, basically there are two types of ranks: professor and "cathedratic". Depend on the University, you can be professor 1 up to 5, depending the time you have working, publications, etc.
