There are several hundred distinct national populations inside Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey, etc. and many do not choose to remain inside the state since the state is considered to be in violent opposition to the nation(s) in pursuit of autonomy or independence. This condition exists in Russia, Spain, England, Mexico, Chile, Taiwan, China and many other states. Without a consistent mechanism for resolving differences, violence ends up being the primary focus. Your thoughts?
The evidence is rather slim that the UN has any real power or authority to address the question of nations inside of states that seek alternative political arrangements. The Rohingya in Burma, Naga in India, Kurds, Yezidi, Assyrians and others in Iraq, Syria, Iran, Turkey and Armenia; and the Catalans, Scots, Welsh and Tartars in Europe are all in the midst of various political and violent conflicts as they seek alternative political arrangements. The United Nations has remained powerless to do anything about the killings by states or the police tactics used to jail political leaders. It seems to me the only alternative is for these nations to create a new world order by joining in their own international framework to push back on these states.
To amplify further...the colonization process, the state-building process advanced by the United Nations combined with the decolonization of "non-self-governing peoples" resulted in 1.9 billion people in thousands of nations captured inside existing states where they occupy the same territory and political space as the state. The state claims sovereignty over all the territory and command over the political decisions. The solution must be conducting negotiations between state parties and indigenous nation parties. Clearly, this condition destabilizes both the nations and the states.
