We found an interesting phenomenon that metal ions could not influence the fluorescence of a compound when the compound was dispersed in solvent. However, the fluorescence of the compound was quenched by the metal ions when the fluorescence compound was casted into a film. Could somebody kindly help us to explain the strange phenomenon?
When you make a solution of the metal ions and fluorescent compound, then dry it into a film, removing the solvent, the concentrations of the metal ions and fluorescent compound are greatly increased. Since fluorescence quenching is dependent on the concentrations of the components, you get much stronger quenching when the components are at higher concentrations.
Qin, do you have the percentage content of the dye relative to the film material? Is fluorescence of the dye different in solution and in solid state?
This can be so called inerfilter effect. Or you could have a complex between a compound as a ligand and a metal ion, which depends on the properties of this ion, the resulting complex does't fluoresce. (You can prove what happened by titration of the compound's solution with metal salt by measuring the fl spectra.) Good luck!
