How does one count the eggs of Spodoptera litura from an egg mass covered with annal hairs without disturbing the eggs?

I find it difficult to count the eggs as they are covered with the egg mass. If we remove the tuft of annal hairs from the egg mass, I get less or no hatching of eggs.

Just leave the eggs for hatching, note the number of hatched larvae. After one day of complete hatching you can remove the hairs and count for unhatched eggs.
