The interaction between leptin and glucocorticoids (GC) is a very dynamic one. Some studies report leptin inhibits HPA axis by supressing CRH release from PVN and directly by reducing GC release from the adrenal glands. However, leptin is also reported to increase CRH release as CRH acts as an anorexigen to suppress hunger under high leptin conditions o short term stress. How can leptin simultaneously upregulate and downregulate the same gene although under different conditions? What are the mechanisms of action? Does it involve different receptors?
