I'm looking for reasons why more novelists should provide details about cultural aspects of the cities in which the plot is set, so as to establish that this will lift the quality of the novel. The reader need not seek travelogues to get a feel of the city. The plot intertwined with the city's unique character is not only more attractive, but it also helps in the inner transformation of the characters themselves.
I think that the goal of a novelist is for the reader to feel engaged in the story, and maybe even to feel part of the story via identifying with one or more of the characters.
The descriptions of the setting, both physically and culturally, help this process.
Very much: The setting in which a work takes place, or of any other artistic genre, is the existential magma on which its characters float and, as such, it gives them character; Don Quixote de la Mancha, would he be such in a different place ?; Lovers of Verona would not be without Verona (like Lovers of Teruel); Death in Venice would not be the same work at all without Venice and the Tale of Two Cities - to cite a few examples that could take us back from the Iliad to the Gallic War - would not exist without both cities, like The Hunchback of Notre Dame without Paris ... then, SUCH IMPACT IS A CONSUSTANCIAL PART OF THE WORK ITSELF AND, WITHOUT IT, IT WOULD NOT EXIST OR WOULD BE ANOTHER !!
Should be an ancient city, with many historical sites and events. This will make readers have more imagination, creating conditions for the situations for the story.
