Using calcite and kaolinite as seeding materials, how does the BET surface of these seeds affect the precipitation of calcium carbonate in supersaturated medium.
Calcite, rhombohedral as shown in the figure attached (IB2). These are calcite powder purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. Kaolinite used are clay mineral standards obtained from a mine in Georgia, US. Cheers!
Dear Prof. Towe, I used them as it is. I understand they are very different in surface area, and I didn't measure it! But, I wonder how these difference in mineral surface area might affect calcium carbonate precipitation? Would it affect the rate of precipitation? Or the mechanism of precipitation? I do noticed some epitaxial growth of CaCO3 on the calcite seeds but none on kaolinite seeds. Thanks a lot for your answers!
