Looking at the data from this radar I get various scattering centers with their coordinates as well as a value for the RCS. My question is, how does it actually calculate the RCS? Is it just using the radar equation together with the observed distance and the measured received power density? I could not find an explicit explanation on how exactly the RCS is calculated.

Hi, Kelvin. The RCS is a parameter inherent to the type of target to be illuminated and not a parameter of the radar. It basically depends on the frequency of the electromagnetic wave (in your case 77 GHz), the polarization and the geometry of the target. There are several software on the market that work with the calculation of RCS: FEKO, HFSS, Epsilon, etc. You only need to have your target modeled in CAD to be able to analyze it in these programs. thank you for your response. If I am not mistaken, you talk about the 'theoretical' calculation of the RCS, right?
I was wondering how you calculate the RCS from actual measurement data from a radar (which is power density I guess?). Because I do not think that the software used by the radar sensor uses CAD tools to calculate the RCS, especially since it does not get any 'model' of the object to be measured.

I understood your demand. Exactly, it is the ratio between the reflected and emitted power density on a target. But, it is quite common, in all applications, to model the target in order to verify all the nuances of the RCS. If you go straight to field evaluations, details may be hidden or ignored in the process. I warn you because small frequency variations, as well as polarizations, in addition to certain dihedrals, can produce completely different RCS, thus compromising the perfect evaluation of the sensor, in this case the radar.
