The Fourth Industrial Revolution - or Industry 4.0 – will come with profound changes in our entire life (social, economical and hope political too) The jobs will change also, thechnologies of every kind, especially digital ones, combine with data analysis, artificial intelligence, cognitive technologies and Internet of things (IoT) to create digital businesses that are not only interconnected but perfectly capable of making informed decisions. In short, this revolution incorporates intelligent technologies, connected to each other, going beyond the organization framework and interfering with our daily lives.
The higher Education prepares a part of the future, more precisely - the human resources of the future, therefore being the peak of the lance, academics must be prepared one step ahead of the changes.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution is overestimated. The chances for dramatic change in humans' life are pretty low.
Let me limit the answer (for the moment) at the manufacturing: the core business – let me say: my major concern - is not the technology itself but the possibility (the capability and the permit) of application of such a technology. Two different situations have to be considered: the use of the technology in order to
1) extend the capabilities (both on the physical and intellectual/knowledge point of view) of workers and
2) control the workers or employed up to the imposition of a specific behaviour that may be not limited to the time or matter subject of the work contract.
Usually, SAFETY is the reason why a control is enforced and, depending on hierarchical position of the worker/employed, such a request / order, is seen as compulsory or just an arbitrary request.
In the case of introduction of technology non affecting directly the performances the background may be different: reduction of insurance cost; optimizing of performances via revision of procedures; collection of information in order to select the personnel.
My personal experience, based on a multinational company, included some examples of the impact of different legislation: in some countries the monitoring of a single worker was admitted and in others it was not allowed. With the “industry 4.0” a continuous monitoring (webcam on helmet) have been introduced (system purchased by a company) everywhere. Of course data are sorting from a single company due to information technology constraint: ERP and System services are on line and the supplier af such a SW has, usually, a direct access or the capability of obtain it. The time being, the competence necessary to generate or obtain data is quite low while the competence necessary to protect data is very high. We are now generating data, not using them and not protect them.
