I promote education in my community through guality of training. High quality of learning supports future of nations and the use of knowledge in communities.

In a Country like Greece, which is now almost 7 years under recession, there is almost nothing to do to promote education. Education is part of society and if society is deteriorating, education follows the general trend. Thousands of scientists, look for a job abroad. For example in Germany now there are over 7,000 doctors working in German hospitals. Actually this is a kind of loan from Greece to Germany!

So the appropriate question for my country should be: How Do You Promote Education in countries under crisis?

We placed bird boxes for research in city streets also to facilitate educative interactions with people passing by. We presume that those people we talked with will talk to other people to spread the 'news'... A practical (and cheap!) example of citizens education (citizens education versus citizens science)?

Good practice, but this does not change things in a country like Greece! First we should invert the negative situation, to have development, etc. otherwise we will left with some precious data.

We have an unusual situation in a populous country like India. Interesting trends aer observed in various parts of the country.On one hand, we have the cities, where colleges churn out graduates in the thousands. On the rural front, we have NGOs and the Govt. promoting education among the population. This stands true for many of the villages. The education-poverty cycle is tough to break, and few individuals with an industrious spirit succeed.

The need for a job is the prime driving force in majority of the cases. Educated parents residing in urban areas, realize the need for higher education/professional training for their children in order to establish their careers. They are also willing to spend money for educating their children well, and to compete with their peers.

This is in contast to the individuals from the lower socio-economic strata, who cannot afford expensive higher education for their children, and mainly target education anywhere between the 6th grade to the 10th grade, which they deem to be 'sufficient' for their kids. Once the children achieve their target, they are encouraged to look for work rather than pursue academic interests.

The situation is changing of course, but at a snail's pace. Gender bias is also rampant, since many would not prefer their daughters being 'too educated' which would (surprisingly !) - 'dim' the chances of finding a groom for marriage.

Many national campaigns have been run, and there is a definite change for the good of course, but the pace is slow.

It is important that parents are encouraged to be actively involved in the education of their child, so that they attain a sufficient level of academics which would enable them to survive in the real worls, and more than all- contribute to the society.

Dear @Dejenie, this is a fundamental question. I usually participate in supporting and promoting education by giving general lectures and motivating my students in the classroom.

@Costas Drosos. I have noticed the same trend in Romania, where because of social and economic regress after 2007 crisis has turned universities into export industries. Most sought specializations are the the ones that provide emigration advantages, especially medicine. Also young researchers emigrate at an alarming rate as universities cannot provide more than a minimum wage. We loose doctors and nurses, engineers, IT' employees to emigration at an unsustainable level.

At the same time there is a sustained campaign in media promoting the image of the people that succeed without education, and a smearing campaign against universities and professors.

As the economic policy was focused towards low labor cost, it has provided little opportunity for young graduates to find a suitable income inside the country, thus compelling them to emigrate.

I am not sure if this was EU policy, or if Romanian employers are simply unable to compete on the EU work-market with competitive wages.

@Djene In terms of promoting research, the best way would be to compel industry to push towards technological progress and innovation. This would create the jobs and give research centers a chance for growth and improvement. This has to be done by public policy in two directions, first completely change measurement of scientific output from publication measurement to applicative research measurement, in order to compel universities to increase their industry involvement, and second to use some kind of incentives for companies investment in research.

Patent registration is to expensive, and provides to little protection at international level to provide independent inventors a source of income. This issue has to be addressed if we are to strive for technological progress.

@Dejenie, I do promote education by extra good primers : good students, good graduates promotions in my community and their achievements, successful careers and implemented projects of my colleagues and myself! I do suggest successful individuals and groups in the field of education for specific awards, at different levels, from community to state level!

This question lead me since 1999 to a line of research that links learning and consciousness management with positive psychology. In my own country the culture processes impact individuals with a clear depressive and hopeless vision of future. We are trying to compare developmental, historical, cultural data and came up with a book which I recommend you to consider: Positive Nations and Communities, published by Springer. Sorry for the self promotion, but the important issue remains: If we as individuals, communities and nations are hopeless about the future what's the use of learning?

When school is in a collective project acts as an educational city in which its inhabitants have an educational concern in all segments of society, not restricted only to traditional spaces. A clean collective environment of a city, can have an educational character to the extent that the citizen sees that everything is well taken care of. This environment is only clean because there are people that cleaned up, and there is an understanding that this is good for the people and the city.

The city becomes educate when cares about the welfare of its citizens, from the collective, individual and group initiatives, valuing human relationships

If I have to choose between promoting competition or promoting collaboration, it will always favor the collaboration approach because it will create more jobs for more people with different education backgrounds.

"- I like this statement because it recognizes what actually is happening and puts the problem in a right perspective, what host countries like Germany gain with no penny of investment for the learning and training of those scientists who fled their country to work for them and at the same time the amount of lose other societies who invest huge amounts of money in educating and training them face - an investment went wrong!

I think these things happen because, society almost cease to value learnt citizens and education in general and start valuing only wealth formation with what ever means available and luxury leaving!

Does culture education (painting, music, architecture) supported by wealthy people belong to wealth formation and luxury living? Would you like to see a world without tremendous cathedrals and paintings? I like to see people showing what they are able to culturally express, independent from the chase for technological inventions and (short-term) economic benefits.

Cultural educations are part and parcel of the education system of a society. Constructing mesmerizing architectural buildings equipped with materials of state of the art, breathtaking and sophisticated bridges of immense importance, technological advancements for efficiency, scientific discoveries to treat diseases for better and healthy living and for longevity, training modern performers of art and music to enrich our soul and mind, e.t.c. are among the many important things the well informed and modern human society do and should do.

But all these activities indeed emanate from an innate desire of those people of wealth and institutions, including governments to promote, support and value education and its vast benefits to their societies. That is what the direction in which a modern society should move and what wealth and its power should serve.

But what we are discussing here in general is, what do we do to promote education in places where the notions I mentioned above disappear, so that those societies and their governments start to see the value of education and the educated people in a correct lens and work toward achieving the kinds of things you and I mentioned.

know that education in a country is centralised, i.e. planed from center. I think, that the centralisation should leave some space for the development and combination of local culture and central objectives. Thus every local society should have a board for deciding the local program. Furthermore we should promote non official education for elders, youngsters, etc, in very important issues, like sustainable development, green development etc. If there is a university around, this can help towards these oblectives.

Dear Sylantyev, " to orient and strengthen students to their inclinations and to make a priori  connections as to what their interests are in their future"  will definitely promote learing with a purpose.

I don't agree with your positive attitude towards Hollywood. As far as science education, kids learn the wrong data for purposes of more exciting viewing and we have to change their thinking when they get to university. Some peoples' minds are difficult to change, too. "I saw this and that at the movie, therefore it must be the truth", "why you are telling us different?"

I do not complement what Hollywood is doing in my thread, instead the point I wanted to make was to ask what we do, media used, to promote education and the learning of science, like what Hollywood does to promote it self and permeates in to society. Indeed we have to make sure that the way we do it has to be through the right and scientific way, where kids do not be confused, where they have learnt something here and another there, that might not be what education of science has to be, instead it has to be consistent, true and legitimate through out the curriculum.
