In a lecturing position, we get involved in teaching, mentoring, professional and community service, and formal research projects. Our traditional research may not be the only way that we are making meaningful publishable contributions. How do our most productive peers harness their diverse contributions to enhance their research and publication outputs?

I have found that it is essential to devote quality time to each member of the research team. By creating a nurturing environment with a culture of listening and mentoring one has sown the seeds for long-term high quality research output. The team leader therefore has a responsibility to manage their own time effectively.
I've done this a couple of different ways. First, I do research in the area of learning. In the class room, I was new to service learning--so I studied the literature and did some of my own research on service-learning. In the end, I published a few articles and improved my own practice. What I learned from that is that when I can consolidate my thinking into fewer areas, I can allocate the resources that I have (including mental resources) towards the same topic but get multiple end states (knowledge, research, practice). I'm not doing a little here, a little there, etc. From this learning, I have tried to consolidate on an even larger level. I am the director of our leadership development minor, I teach leadership and leadership development, and I do research on leadership development in college students.
