Is there anybody who has worked with ASI (Annual Survey of Industries) Firm-Level data? I have extracted the data files with STATA, and now I need help with creating a panel for 2000-2010, for which I need the plant-identifiers. Can anyone please share their script/do file? Thank you very much.
You can talk to ASI head office in Calcutta, near GPO, the red building opposite HSBC. It is not easy to get unit level industry data. Instead, you can use 6 digit classification which is highly disaggregated data. My Ph. D. was on Indian industry, technology, productivity and efficiency. Work and enjoy.

Thank you very much for your reply, Mr. Buddhadeb Ghosh. I have spoken with MOSPI officials who guided me to the ASI unit level data, which is now available for free on microdata.gov.in. It's the same data that was previously available for purchase in the form of CDs. I installed Nesstar Publisher software to access and extract the data, as per the readme.doc. So I have the unit-level data with me.
My concern is about creating a panel, which requires mapping of establishments/factories of each year. Should I merge the data of different years using DSL (Despatch Serial No.)? But I am unsure if DSL remains the same every year for the establishment/factory. Thank you.
My papers on panel data are available in RG. As far as I know, unless the same units (firms or households) are repeated for 20 or 25 years, frontier production function or panel data modeling can not be applied. And in the case of ASI, firms get changed over time. ASI records those firms which submit their data sheets to ASI.
