I'm interested in knowing how physicians routinely follow patients with pulmonary embolism, after the first three months of anticoagulants. There is some evidence in favor of D-dimer testing and residual thrombosis after deep vein thrombosis (DVT), but what about PE?

The questions I would pose to you are: i) do you perform a CT pulmonary angiogram to know if the therapy has been efficacious, and when; ii) do you order an echocardiogram to know if there is post-embolic pulmonary hypertension, and when; iii) has pulmonary scintigraphy any role in follow-up of PE; iv) do you believe in the utility of a normal D-dimer level after PE?
