I agree with you about the possibility of easily cracking software. But as you know the software development goes through a cycle called software engineering which includes a never ending process called testing and maintenance which requires a continuous funding to improve the software. For all this reason we should refuse software piracy and respect other's intellectual property. Moreover, I agree that sometime the prices are so high which cannot be afforded by low income students and researchers in this case the prices should be lower for non profit use..

As a matter of fact Proprietary Software may also use chunks of Free Open Source Software wisely cobbled up.Being a Proprietary Software nobody can make out what is inside,if effective Anti Piracy Measures are incorporated..
Even FOSS (FREE OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE) can also follow this method,as is being done by some Software Developers in using Web Features etc.
It is a Free for All Game,any one can play.
