Also, employers often promote competition at the workplace. If everyone is doing his/her job giving the maximum and trying to improve his/her skills, than no one would have time to be envious. The only competition should be directed against ourselves.

I guess the situation becomes complicated when the centers of power within the institution and organization can manupulate situations and people to promote victimization, student maligning of faculty, and mistrust as a result of their professional envy. How do you handle the latter?

I know that hurts. A lot. You will experience times of black clouds and thunder and you will have to resist bravely. Find a friendly shoulder to give you support and go on. I've experienced being left aside from everything and everyone. It hurts as well. It is the price we pay for some professional choices we make. Keep in mind you are good enough to change places and go somewhere you are respected. But learning to deal with envious people is important. Arguing and confronting them doesn't pay the effort. Do what you know best and avoid listening to gossips and to toxic people. My mother used to say they get tired of targetting us if we don't fight back and stop having us and our work in the spot.

Great question! The best practice as I see it is to spend your energy on doing good work and getting along with others. Be kind and professional to all. Do not gossip or talk about others behind their back as that lowers you and your ethical behaviors. I tend to keep my research and publications quiet. I do report them to the dean and administration in my annual report and they know. I also recommend two other protection measures. In my personal point of view, envy will always be an innate nature of human attitude that roams around the workplace every now and then. It is an invisible force that needs to be dealt with in the organization for sometimes it might be the cause of lots of work-related inconveniences and inappropriateness. I consider this matter a cycle of "insecurity" within one's self. Envy has its own ups and downs, personally, it could be a source of motivation for one to mature and persevere or it might also lead to destruction, on which we do not want to happen. Solution? There are ways on how to deal with it in the workplace, you can simply ignore it (provided you are not that affected or downplayed), you can also tolerate it to some point (especially if it is already rampant and obvious), or sometimes, you just have to deal or confront it (especially if its already your dignity and pride which is on the line). However we intend to make around envy depends on the personality we possess. It might break us or it might lead us to a better workplace environment in the end. Regards,

Ok, so: 1] make sure there is a career pathway for employees at all levels (after all, if they are really good, you want to keep them working for you). 2] Emphasise caree development at performance reviews (tyrain your managers to do this- investing in people). 3] when recruiting, write co-operative/teamplayer/ethical values into the person specification for all jobs (have to think about & articulate those values very carefully).

As a professional I try my best to perform my duties at a very high level and as such, set very high standards for myself. I have noted that as I go along there are those who appreciate my work ethic and I am promoted accordingly or given opportunities to participate in higher level professional development and training programmes. Conversely, there are those who are so focused on watching what I do and gossiping about it that they miss out on opportunities themselves. I think that professional envy is unprofessional because it reeks of small-mindedness, insecurity and tunnel-vision....it therefore, stunts or limits or slows down one's upward mobility. Where's the growth in that? The workplace for me, will always be a competitive arena but it is how we manage that competition without perpetuating an atmosphere that is ripe for professional envy.

Be kind and "above reproach" in any dealings with them. And remember, you can't win them all.

I want to add to this discussion that I think congratulating others who have done well at a project helps to create a workplace climate that supports colleagues in doing well. This practice can be encouraged to promote excellence by all which heightens the reputation and credibility of the organization and all who work there!

My personal point of view in dealing with professional envy in the workplace is to put a policy down that help to resolve it.

I am an advocate of equality and diversity framework.

My suggestion is for an organization to embrace equality and diversity framework, that organization must be committed to the policy.

As professionals, we must understand and embrace Equality and Diversity Policy : This is a way of staying matured and civilized the 21th century ways of life; this will help us to be committed to treating all members of our organization, fairly and equitably regardless of class, colour, ethnic or tribal origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, religious or political beliefs, membership of professional associations or trade unions, disability, marital status, family responsibility and socio-economic standing or any other category like professional envy were found, that will lead to discrimination cannot be reasonably justified around us anymore in this 21st century.

As a professional we must be proactive in promoting equality through the embracing, valuing and recognition of difference including cultural and religious differences.

However, our understanding of equality, diversity, framework, and our ability to be committed to a wide range of equalities scheme to tackle all facets of inequality and discrimination, to create genuine equality of opportunity and promote good relations between people of different groups will wipe out professional envy in our workplace

Humanly speaking, it is natural for you to be envied by people, especially when you are making progress. First of all , you must understand that those who envy your progress are lagging behind you professionally. They are either retrogressive or static entities. For you not to be held down, you need to maintain a clear focus. Never get distracted by their antics.It is time for you to be very careful and get close to your God because such people are naturally evil- minded. Do your best to maintain good relationship with them and never make conscious attempt to parade your achievements before them. Be a silent achiever. Let your feats speak for you and you will always see them bury their heads in shame while you keep soaring higher.
