many researcher ask this question, the International collaboration is becoming the norm in scientific and technical research but issues such as different time zones, research practices, and cultural expectations can still be problematic. What tips or warnings would you share with others who are embarking on an international collaboration?
I have been collaborating with research partners around the works for 15 years.
We use text messaging, email and Skype.
One of the most important things is being able to calculate the time zone differences. For example, as I write this, it is Saturday morning, but for my collaborators in Asis, it is getting close to bedtime Saturday night.
find the right idea or project, then find people interested in the field, the rest is a matter of coordination and time management.

My own experience as well as research on the subject shows that communication through digital media is (sometimes strongly) affected by cultural differences, even amongst highly educated persons. Persons from cultures with more direct communication patterns with low context should be aware and accept that using digital media (low context) is more natural for them than for persons from other cultures.
