Assuming your manuscript was accepted and published online in 2019 but was added to a 2020 issue, which year are researchers working in 2019 supposed to cite your work with, 2019 or 2020?
Is supossed to be cited with the year of the final issue... Because even if is a preprint, the journal put the year is going to be the issue it belongs to...
I agree with all the previous responses. However, most journal will state clearly at the end how the article should be cited. If not stated a journal citation should be in the year of publication stated on the journal not the year before.
I do agree with previous opinion... I HV come across such instances in 2019. What I did was to use the current year with the doi as recommended by the journal. This year while working on a work I used that article again and when I checked the journal homepage it was already fixed to a volume in 2020.
