I am newer to research and trying to figure out what journals to submit my work to (healthcare field). The things that appeal to me most are open access and limited restrictions with regards to number of references. I’m curious if other authors have a strategy by which they prioritize the 1st journal they plan to submit to, and how they choose secondary journals if needed. Also, what are the most important factors in this decision: The topic/focus of the journal, impact factor, prestige, open access, charges/fees, time until decision/speed, peer review style, reference/text limits, indexing, the editorial staff, or other factors? I have seen the publisher-specific journal finder sites but I’m not sure how accurate or helpful they are. I have heard critiques about the impact factor, and see new journals emerging which seem to allow more flexibility in the publishing process, so I wonder if the changing publishing landscape will influence how researchers may answer this question.

Thank you,

Rob
