Over the last two decades, a global movement has emerged calling for a new model of learning for the twenty-first century. There is now a substantial body of literature focusing primarily on three topics: motivations for a new learning model, the specific competencies and skills needed to be effective in the twenty-first century, and the pedagogy required to stimulate those capabilities. This is a thorough review of the literature. It focuses on the competencies and skills deemed necessary in contemporary organizations. While it is widely acknowledged that formal education must be transformed to enable the new ways of learning required to address the complex international challenges of the future, there is no consensus on how to do so.
