Yes, that I think has already been considered and people are working on it. Adaptive protection essentially needs some artificial intelligence to switch over between the modes, and most commonly used means probably is communication network. But I was thinking if we can use the same old conventional method of over current protection in both the modes by modifying the fault current level externally.

I think the external modifying of the current levels would be more complicated and even non-economic. Because a new device is being added to the protection system and it needs special considerations.
