We are aware and we have successfully found out about the regions where the brain stores different kinds of memory. I mean different stimuli corresponding to vision, sound, smell etc. But do we not see this that in terms of actual mechanism associated, it is basically just a bunch of molecules interacting in someway to give you something as abstract as an image? The notion of an absolute present moment and an absolute past is flawed isn't it?
