We are aware and we have successfully found out about the regions where the brain stores different kinds of memory. I mean different stimuli corresponding to vision, sound, smell etc. But do we not see this that in terms of actual mechanism associated, it is basically just a bunch of molecules interacting in someway to give you something as abstract as an image? The notion of an absolute present moment and an absolute past is flawed isn't it?
The Telephone Model

I suggest it works the same way with our brain. The sole very difficult thing encompasses that we telephone with ourselves c.q. we communicate/telephone with our brain in which the perception organ (!) is the transformer. So the hardware of the eyes, the ears, the nose etc. figure as the middle man.
Example:
We see a coffee cup -> we receive visual stimuli in the relevant part of the eye -> the brain is right away firing to that part with stored cognitive knowledge
I'm real sure that you're right and the concept is flawed. I think we expand in time much as we do space and that our experience of the past is like how we experience a spatial extent
