This is a fantastic question, Mercy! I've been thinking about issues related to this lately too. One way we might consider this issue is to look at the quantitative and qualitative data for the admitted college students required to take developmental courses designed to prepare college students for the courses that will count toward their degree programs. I am concerned about financial burden that developmental courses add to students' college expenses especially since they usually aren't included toward their degree program. The courses are designed to help students strengthen or develop the skills they need to successfully complete their writing-intensive and math-based courses. It would also be a good idea to interview the instructors and students from the introductory math and English courses. They would have a lot of insights on performance, difficulty, and readiness from both perspectives. I know there will be many other responses and approaches suggested and look forward to hearing more about your research in this area.

Pamela Williams , I like your idea/approach to this issue. I agree with you that interviewing the students and instructors might be a good direction to measure the level of readiness of students for college and how their K-12 preparation impacts their readiness.

Is there any reason why you specifically mentioned English and Maths? Could one also consider other subjects like History, Computing, the Sciences, etc?

I think it’s good to prepare students and expose them to introductory college classes (like the Advanced Placement Program/AP exam) as they will gain experiences to think critically, analyze data, write essays not for the sake of writing only but to think in very creative ways. But, there is one issue here, schools should introduce this system earlier to students in order to comprehend all the dense materials. Let’s say if they were to take introductory college classes starting from their junior year and senior year it would be quite difficult to get used to because all the content that is taught needs to be delivered in a professional way and starting late is not the best idea.

(Part two)

Introducing introductory college classes from freshman year is good for students to adapt to the rigorous courses but of course some teachers (and sometimes students) fail to understand that heavy material is not about sitting down for 8 hours straight and memorising content, learning can be fun by experimenting, going to labs if science lessons are taken by students, or visiting historical museums and/or places if students are taking history classes. I understand not all students can visit places but teachers can share some interesting information and make it a story time. That way students can slowly but surely adapt better and once they get to their senior year they have gained the skills to study efficiently.

We are dealing with similar projects, what we have done, is to condense the knowledge students must achieve into three categories as knowledge, abilities and attitude; hence create a measurement for each category. Apply the questionnaires and once data is gathered, the analysis is the key step to visualize the gaps we must remediate.
