We would like to set up a laboratory scale pyrolysis system, to collect biochar, tar (liquid) and gas (syngas). Any suggestions and references would be greatly appreciated.
Please find the attached file here. In this article you can get an schematic diagram of a pyrolysis system which help you to install a laboratory level unit. In that system you can recover the biochar and tar (liquid). For collecting gases (syngas) you may need to do some modification in the pyrolysis system.
Any activation needed or just biochar production? You need some protective gas, N2 or Ar, this will have effect on the analysis of pyrolysis gas, if performed.
We used a metal tube (SS316) inserted in a tubular oven. In- and outlets closed by Swegelock units for the feed of protective gas. Bioms shold in place by a piece quartzwool. Gases and pyoil bubbled over a gas-washing bottle, oils will stay in the bottle. Gas collected into Tedlar bags or directed to an online GC, efter filtering.
