I am not sure whether you are hinting at an original research project for academic research or for writing, for instance, a research article. In case you mean the former, I suspect that we all begin research as young novices, and need the guidance and support of a supervisor, who is expected to know what is going on within the intellectual community he belongs to. A student does not have enough reading background to come up with an original project; his/her supervisor will be better equipped to suggest original topics or projects.
However, if you are talking about research articles, the researcher needs to be immersed in what is going on in his/her intellectual community, i.e. be acquainted with and read research in his/her area of expertise. This is the only way not to regurgitate what others have said. Originality can be enhanced by the nature of the corpus that you have or the theoretical angle or approach from which the topic is tackled.

What are the tips to highlight the originality of the research project? From the research project, you can compile the research articles. If the project is original, the articles will be original too.
