Dear Olwethu, you can calculate as recommended by Ashvin. However, does it make sense as you assumed 166666 plants per ha, which is not in line to common practice. Therefore, you should present and dicuss you result in term of fertilzer impact per pot/plant. In addition you can present converted valies (...per ha) - requires description of your assumtion (166666 vs. 100000) and discussion of related uncertainties. Best Nils

I would be very careful to translate yields from pots towards field conditions. The conditions between pot and field simply differ (think of the physical conditions, light interception, drainage etc.)

Duraid answer is appropriate because bunds, path, subpath, irrigation channels area in the field needed to be deducted and is approximately 10-15%

The amount of plant yield cultivated in pots is not the same as those planted in the soil due to the different conditions of growth in both cases,therefor you can not have a real imagination about the actual productivity in the field depending on the results of pots

Basically I agree with Jetse Stoorvogel and Ali Alhayany . It is very risky to extrapolate yield from experiments in vessels on the hectare: the conditions are to different, different canopy densities, differences in the underground, for example, the space available for rooting. But one would like to know, of course, in which relations the yields of the vessel experiments are moving. One wants to know if they are representative for the practice. That’s why we do such calculations. But not from the single plant. We determine the yield per vessel. Furthermore, we know how big the surface area of the vessel in cm² is. We set the yield per vessel in relation to the area of the vessel. Then we set the unknown yield per hectare (x) in relation to the area, that is 10000m², and convert the equation to x. Now you can calculate the yield per area. But please, please use the result only for guidance! Interpret very carefully and refer to the shortcomings in discussion!

As pointed out you don't extrapolate field experiment to get yields. In this situation you need to get dry matter from representative plants, then by use of a harvest index calculate the yields.

Step 1. Sample about five plants

Step 2. Get the fresh weight

Step 3. Oven dry them to remove all moisture and weigh again.

Step 4. Get the dry Weight which will be the dry matter content for the five plants..divide by 5 to get the average

Step 5..multiply that the plant density you will get the biomass per hectare

Step 6. Divide the biomass by the harvest index of that crop to get the yields in tons/ha.

Expressing your yield in per ha basis is not necessarily saying you are going to have the same yield if you cultivate same plants on one ha. It's just a standardize unit which might be necessary for comparisons on under similar conditions! The most important thing is that, your methodology has to be as explicit as possible. You can express your pot/glasshouse experiment on xx/ha. However, you must mention it was a pot experiment and show how you did your conversion.

Dear sir, this is wrong concept to take the yield per plant and converting per ha bcz, i will tell the reason, if the one plant is died, what u will conclude 100 % loss,,,,,, and another example, think 2 plants / pot, one plant is died, result is 50 % loss,,, so u have to take the approriate number of plants/pot is more accuracy as i feel.

I think the second way will be more accurate than the first one. In other word, I am of the opinion that you can multiply the yeild of one single plant per pot to the standard plant population in ha. However, due to different conditions in the pot and field experiments, as the other investigators recommend it can be brought as kg per pot.

If, there is an obligation to use kg per ha, it should be noted that, since

yeild is strongly affected by plant population, therefore, it is recommended to calculate the studied plant population in ha base on the surface area of the pots.

Recently several papers have been published to criticize generalizing the pot experiments to field scale. Therefore, I would not recommend doing so. In general the pot experiments are done for studying the plant physiology in controlled conditions.

Hi Olwethu. About your question. I think you can do an estimate of crop yield at community level with your data at individual plant yield. But you must assume some crop parameters related with scaling-up processes between the unknown levels of you crop ecological hierarchy levels. Muy interesante perspectiva, estoy en completo acuerdo, si el propósito es generar información para la toma de decisiones de manejo o para mejoramiento del cultivo. Sin embargo, si es para fines de aprendizaje de los procesos fisiológicos, o bien como un ejercicio de simulación. Resulta interesante destacar que en la literatura se aprecian modelos teoricos sólidos, en lo que es posible realizar extrapolaciones, si se tiene las precauciones que implican los supuestos. En este último sentido, si me parece posible evaluar alguna hipótesis. Pero también es cierto que es un trabajo extra y que, eventualmente, lo más cómodo sea repetir el experimento bajo condiciones de comunidad.

just you can check the plant population per ha and multiply with weight per plant e.g. 1plant = 15 g , 1000 plant per ha.... 15000 g total weight and then divided by 1000 simply answer is 15 kg per ha

Rarely (almost none) one converts data from a pot experiment to yield/ha because the growing conditions are completely different and if you applied the same data in a field experiment you will get different results. the safest way is to relate the results to number of plants/pot and can be used as indicator for a field experiment.

No, better to report g/plant than converting. It could be misleading. You can only convert to yield/ha if you have the data performed at field base experiment which area is already known.

2,00,000 plant give= 5/1*200000=1000000 g

g to kg = 1000000/1000= 1000 kg/ha

Simply multiply the number of plant you calculated since the spacing is not giving (166666) by weight of one plant.

It is not recommended to calculate the yield per hectare based on potexperiments due to the completely different conditions between field conditions and these experiments.
