as an alternative you might try barley straw or other options (see for instance: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/wq/plants/algae/lakes/ControlOptions.html
it appears that part of my answer got lost in the process. You should be careful with coagulants-flocculants, since algae settled tend to survive and cause problems at the sediment level. once said this, it is always a problem of trial and error, since dosages depend on water characteristics, the characteristics of the clay, species ofalgae and algae concentration. luck
