17 September 2015 13 7K Report

Hi, i currently experiencing difficulties in calculating appropriate sample size for a dengue study. I am using formula by Peduzzi.P et al 1996 (Peduzzi, P., et al., A simulation study of the number of events per variable in logistic regression analysis. J Clin Epidemiol, 1996. 49(12): p. 1373-9.) which is N= (10 * k)/ p where, k is number of variables and p is the proportion of disease.

The numerator for the proportion will be number of confirmed dengue cases in 2014. However, i m not sure how to determine the denominator. Is it appropriate to use number of cases suspected to have dengue in 2014 as the denominator or total number of patients visited the hospital 2014?

It is an retrospective cohort study based on a records from a hospital located in a dengue hot-spot.

Your help and assistance will be greatly appreciated
