I am doing a syudy on microplast in freshwater and I need a simpel yet effectiv way to dissolve the exoskeleton of the invertebrates I catch without damaging the microplastic
They compared a number of approaches (KOH, ProteinaseK ...)
Rist, S., Baun, A., Hartmann, N.B., 2017. Ingestion of micro- and nanoplastics in Daphnia magna – Quantification of body burdens and assessment of feeding rates and reproduction. Environmental Pollution 228, 398–407. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envpol.2017.05.048
Always depends on your microplastic if it works without changing them
Potassium hydroxide works slowly and is used by many entomologists to clear specimens; dissolving the pigments from thicker sclerites so that the animal is intact but you can visualize gut contents.
